But all of this would only be half as entertaining if the main characters were obnoxious. Fortunately, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” is one of the more pleasant, although not one of the absolute top Ferrell comedies: Dobkin only rarely stages the inevitable moments in which Lars embarrasses himself in a hateful way, but instead puts the emphasis on it instead, more in a way of empathic shame for others, that is, through (therefore harmless) laughter above him pity with created for him. Despite this, Lars is simply incredibly stupid in some scenes. So much so that the overall picture of his behavior becomes implausible at some point, and the dramaturgically worn-out misunderstandings between him and Sigrit also turn out to be unconvincing. That’s what Ferrell’s Oneliners are for. And also the stunning Rachel McAdams (“Doctor Strange”) lifts the whole film a lot with charm, lightness and a “being there is everything, but we can still do our best” mentality that seems much healthier next to Lars.

Conclusion: “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” is an off-the-shelf loser comedy – garnished with “Eurovision” glitter. Amusing, a bit strange, but all in all more adapted than would have been possible.
